This course will focus on the premodern developments of world civilization, beginning with the Paleolithic Era and ending at around 1500 CE. Emphasis will be placed on the major persons and events which shaped the societies and cultures of the ancient and post-classical periods of history.

HST 111  United States History I  (3 Credits)  

This course examines the history of the United States from its origins in the pre-Columbian era to the Reconstruction Era. Students can expect to study the history of the indigenous peoples, the colonial period, the American Revolution and its aftermath, as well as the early national period, slavery, and the Civil War.

This course examines the history of the United States from the end of the Reconstruction Era to the present day. Students can expect to study the emergence of the country as a world power, the international conflicts it found itself involved in, the various waves of immigration, as well as both the Civil Rights and Women's Rights movements.

This course examines the history of Black peoples from their advent in the New World to the Civil War. Emphasis will be placed on African heritage and its contributions to the development of African American culture, along with the slave trade, the early struggles for emancipation, and the impact of the Civil War.

This course examines the African American experience from Reconstruction and the Jim Crow South to the Civil Rights Movement and the present day. Emphasis will be placed on the societal developments, intellectual leaders, and everyday people who continue the struggle towards representation and equality.

HST 131  Latin American History I  (3 Credits)  

This course examines the history of Latin America, starting with the pre-­Columbian era. From there, students can expect to cover the establishment of the Spanish and Portuguese Empires before ending with the wars of independence in the 1830s.

This course examines the development and growth of the peoples of Africa from prehistoric times to the 19th century CE. HST 204  Women in American History  (3 Credits)  

This course will focus on the lives of significant women throughout American history. Emphasis will be placed on women's changing roles as well as the diversity of their experiences on a racial, ethnic, and class basis.

HST 205  Islam & The Black Experience  (3 Credits)  

This course examines the history of Islam as both a community of faith for Muslims and as a horizon of Black consciousness via a broad African-diasporic lens. Starting with the earliest presence of Muslims in Africa around the 7th century CE, students will explore the expansion of the religion across the continent and beyond as it pertains to the aforementioned relationship between Islam and the global Black community. Emphasis will be placed upon the interconnection of race, religion, and culture.

HST 206  Hist. of American Immigration  (3 Credits)  

This course will examine the history of voluntary and involuntary immigration to the United States from the colonial period to the present day. Students can expect to cover key turning points within this scope of history, focusing on important legislation, economic factors, and political debates which have shaped the immigrant experience in the U.S. In addition, students will also learn how that experience has been shaped by questions centered on race, fitness for citizenship, gender, sexuality, nativism, class, and labor. Emphasis will be placed upon providing a meaningful context for better understanding contemporary policies and issues via the exploration of the origins of "legal" vs. "illegal" immigration, the exclusion and inclusion of various groups, the complexities of racial construction, and how immigrants have been perceived and have perceived themselves, namely the ways in which particular communities have been stigmatized, demonized, and valorized.

HST 208  Genocide & The Holocaust  (3 Credits)  

This course will focus on the Holocaust and other genocides over the last six hundred years such as the Armenian, Cambodian, and Rwandan. Emphasis will be placed on the political, social, and ideological issues leading up to these moments, as well as the consequences of these crimes against humanity.
