MUS 100  Music Appreciation  (3 Credits)  

This course introduces and acquaints the student with various aspects of music, including outstanding composers, the different types of music they created, how the music is performed, great performers and conductors, and the techniques involved in these fields. Emphasis will be placed upon the development of skills needed to become an intelligent listener.

MUS 105  Musicianship I  (2 Credits)  

This course covers music theory, including basic music tools (i.e., major scales and intervals). It is designed for the music major. It is the first course in the Musicianship Series.

MUS 106  Musicianship II  (2 Credits)  

This is a continuation of MUS 105. Students will expand upon their instruction in music theory. It is designed for the music major. It is the second course in the Musicianship Series.

Pre-requisites: MUS 105 with a minimum grade of C

MUS 109  Jazz Appreciation  (3 Credits)  

A comprehensive study of jazz, from its origins to the present day. Study will be centered on influential composers, instrumentalists, vocalists, and arrangers. This course will also include an introduction to and study of musical elements, such as instrumentation, lyrics, form, rhythm, and harmony.

MUS 110  Music of the World  (3 Credits)  

This course will cover the global history of music from its origins to the present day. Emphasis will be placed upon the perspective of stylistic and cultural contexts, emphasizing the development of listening, score reading, stylistic analysis, critical thinking, and communication skills.

MUS 115  Ear Training and Sight Singing  (2 Credits)  

This course will help students develop music reading and related aural skills through practice and application of sight-reading techniques and ear training procedures. It is designed for the music major.

Pre-requisites: (Write Placer Essay with a score of 1 and Reading (Next-Gen) with a score of 200)

MUS 116  Ear Trng & Sight Singing II  (2 Credits)  

This is a continuation of MUS-115 designed to further develop music reading and related aural skills through practice and application of sight-reading techniques and ear training procedures. It is designed for the music major.

Pre-requisites: MUS 115 with a minimum grade of C

MUS 117  African American Music  (3 Credits)  

A detailed study of the unique and essential elements that characterize Black music in both vocal and instrumental styles, giving emphasis to its historical development and role as a major force in shaping America's musical tastes.

MUS 121  Voice Class I  (2 Credits)  

This course is designed to train and develop the individual voice and ear for solo work as well as for ensemble singing. Areas of study include breathing, tone production, diction, general musicianship, and interpretation. It is designed for the music major. It is the first course in the Voice Class Series.

MUS 122  Voice Class II  (2 Credits)  

This course is designed to train and develop the individual voice and ear for solo work as well as for ensemble singing. MUS 170  Intro. to Music Technology  (3 Credits)  

This course introduces students to the technology available that can aid in the creation, refinement, and preservation of music. Broad topics covered will include the scientific properties of audio and acoustics, digital audio workstation (DAW) software, MIDI, audio editing and mixing, the fundamentals of recording, file types, and music notation software.

Pre-requisites: MUS 105 with a minimum grade of C and MUS 115 with a minimum grade of C

MUS 205  Musicianship III  (2 Credits)  

This is an intermediate course in music theory. It is designed for the music major. It is the third course in the Musicianship Series.

MUS 206  Musicianship IV  (2 Credits)  

This is a continuation of MUS-205. Students will expand upon their instruction in music theory. It is designed for the music major. It is the fourth and final course in the Musicianship Series.
